Addon Alpha Release: ViewNews PHP

Postby kriko » Sat Jul 26, 2003 10:54 am

hey,

sumaleth posted in a topic and I got an idea from that :p to make a php viewnews :) would anyone be interested in that?

I think what I might do is basically "convert" all the latest viewnews.cgi functions and stuff to php.

well, only if it would make any difference and so on...

-------------------------------------------------------------

The topic started out as an idea for ViewNewsPHP. But later I developed it on and now it is a very powerful viewnews and searchnews combined in PHP language. The latest alpha at this moment is 8.

Since school has started and I am busier than ever I am not going to have much time to mess with it. I also have got many other things to do.

If you wonder why I posted it as a sticky you can complain, but the reason I did it is that it would be easier for people to notice (including me). I haven't posted it to the addons section, since it is in alpha.

Releases:
Alpha 2
Alpha 3
Alpha 4
Alpha 5
Alpha 6
Alpha 7
Alpha 8

I has been mentioned sometimes before, and I think it would be absolutely great for those of us who make our sites in php. Hail Estonia!!

It's impossible given what's required. But enjoy the idea :)

hmm, well, it's possible when to filter out all the perlcode from the styles.

I haven't looked into it, so yes this might be impossible.

something like this was done for NewsPro.

Over half of my old styles would've broken had the Perl been filtered from them.

It'd be too much work for me to bother :p

so, would it be pointless to make a php viewnews or not? really, would there be any use for it and why would it be better than cgi viewnews?

hows this, design the basics for one

one that shows diff categories, single newsids

then put in abilities to use diff templates, and diff styles

back when i used styles, i had php in them, so compensate for that, as well as converting perlcode, if and else commands, whatever

what could you make as v1.0?

probably use an addon to help with it if needed

if your anxious about it, start on it

I was thinking something in the lines of fetching data from newsdat.txt then displaying stuff using templates and styles :)

styles among styles, quite similar expression replacing as coranto's build way, converting stuff like if and so on.

nothing else I guess.

a php version ov viewnews is possible.
Probably easier to do from scratch rather than converting it all..

Interesting to me would be to see a comparison of performance opening the same (largish) newsdat, same style and template... So if you do it, please post it then...
Coranto addons:
* GuestPost, one click guestposting
* MoveIt!, Advanced Backup and site transfer
* PartialRebuild, CPU-friendly enhancement of FullBuild
* URLColumn, URLs for multiple Categories/Profiles
* Tickit!, Javascript News Tickers/Faders for Coranto!
* AddonEnabler, enables or disables single, multiple or all addons in one go
* SubmitMultiple, post consecutive news in an automatic loop!
* RSSAdvanced, RelatedNews ....

sorry for the double post. It was accidental...
Yes a flat database viewer conversion would be a pretty good start...

I have to agree with phil here, it would be (near) impossible to do a php version of viewnews.cgi. I'm talking mostly about the crcfg.dat portion. Even if you do manage to do it properly, I can bet $5 it will be MUCH slower then the Perl version. Why? Because you would have to make some sort of an interprenter in PHP to load the Perl arrays and hashes that are located in crcfg.dat. Once you've done that, you'd have to make your own StyleToPerl function instead of using the already processed (and useless in PHP) style subs which are already in crcfg.dat. Those two things alone would cause a pretty harsh hit on the server and load time, especially since the new StyleToPerl function would have to be run on every single news item in the database. Also, I'm not exactly sure how you plan on immitating the SplitDataFile sub from crcfg.dat in PHP. The rest should be pretty straight forward though.

Having said that, I have somewhat limited PHP experience so there may be other ways of doing things. If you can think of them, please let me know.
Keep the dream alive!

well, I am not planning to acess crcfg.dat :p I am taking it in another way. the style the user wants will be located in viewnews.php :) only thing loaded outside is newsdat.txt, and well, the template image.

the style inside the script will be evaluated in a similar way coranto deals with it's styles, the if and other tags and so on. possible tag PHPCode will also be in.

well, I'll see how I can manage. gonna watch some movies today and after that, I'll start coding.
